Short Biography

Dr. Andreas Spiegelberg is a senior scientist in The Interface Group at the Institute of Physiology. He also works as a consultant in R&D, quality management, CE-marking, and regulatory affairs for medical device manufacturers. He joined The Interface Group in July 2014, after leaving from his position as a managing director of the Spiegelberg Company in Hamburg, a manufacturer of medical devices focussing on systems for the monitoring of intracranial pressure. Dr. Spiegelberg is a mechanical engineer with a specialization in biomedical engineering. He was educated at the University of Karlsruhe and the Technical University of Berlin. He also received the degree Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the TU Berlin. He worked with Prof. Klaus Affeld, the head of the engineering group of Prof. Emil S. Bücherl’s artificial heart research group at the FU Berlin on several research projects. Before he spun off to start the Spiegelberg Company in 1986, he had also worked as a visiting fellow with Prof. Edward Gertz at the University of California and Prof. Willem Kolff at the University of Utah. Dr. Spiegelberg’s research interest is the biofluid mechanics of the central nervous system, particularly Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Awards

  1. Award for Innovative Medical Technology from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Reserach given for the development of a new catheter that prevents access of bacteria by means of a balloon which fills up the inside of the catheter (2009)
  2. Award for Innovative Medical Technology from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Reserach given for the development of a new method for non-invasive blood pressure measurement (2008)
