Short Biography

Prof. Vartan Kurtcuoglu is the head of the The Interface Group at the Institute of Physiology. He has joint appointments at the Faculties of Medicine and Science of the University of Zurich as extraordinary professor of Computational and Experimental Physiology, and he is a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. Prof. Kurtcuoglu obtained his diploma in mechanical engineering from ETH Zurich in 2002 after successful completion of his diploma thesis at the French National Center of Scientific Research, CNRS PROMES. He received his PhD from ETH Zurich in 2006 with a thesis on the computational modeling of the cerebral ventricular cerebrospinal fluid system. In 2011, Dr. Kurtcuoglu was a visiting scientist in medicine at Harvard Medical School and a visiting scientist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Cardiovascular Medicine, in Boston. Prof. Kurtcuoglu is PI of several national and international research projects in the areas of cerebrospinal fluid flow, hemodynamics and endothelial cell mechanics. He is the chairman of the International Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics Society. His interest is the convergence of engineering, biological and medical research to address clinical needs.
